Colleen T. Wheeler, a wedding industry professional, has been selected as a volunteer to help decorate the White House for the 2026 holiday season. This achievement is notable, as it follows a previous unsuccessful application, highlighting her persistence and expertise.

Wheeler’s background spans weddings, theater, and creative production. Her family operates two wedding venues in Upstate South Carolina—a historic 1920s mansion and a Victorian greenhouse. Raised by parents involved in design and importing, she developed an early understanding of visual presentation and environment creation, which now informs her work in transforming spaces.

The White House decorating project begins in late November, bringing together volunteers from across the country. Volunteers are responsible for their own travel and accommodations, making this a significant personal commitment. Wheeler’s selection came after she reapplied following an earlier rejection, a step that shows her determination in a competitive field.

Wedding professionals like Wheeler are accustomed to tight deadlines, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and logistical coordination, skills directly applicable to the White House project. Both roles require creativity under pressure, precise execution, and the ability to deliver a cohesive vision before an audience arrives. The White House team, similar to wedding designers, must synchronize materials, labor, and timing to create a unified experience.

Many professionals face rejections in client work, competitions, or industry programs, yet few reapply after an initial refusal. Wheeler’s acceptance shows that determination, combined with skill, can open doors to unique opportunities.

The wedding industry’s expertise is frequently underestimated outside its immediate circle. Mastering large-event production, where aesthetics, logistics, and teamwork intersect, requires specialized abilities. Wheeler’s involvement in the White House project highlights how these skills extend beyond traditional event spaces, validating their value in high-profile settings.

She will join the decorating team from November 23 to November 29, applying her experiential design background to a globally recognized holiday tradition.
