British Couple Holds Gothic Beach Wedding in Philippines

British couple Sammi and Anton married in London but traveled to the Philippines for a seaside celebration that blended gothic aesthetics with tropical scenery.

A gothic seaside ceremony

The pair described the atmosphere as “beach goth” or “goths on the beach”, a term they used to signal a deliberate clash of dark attire and bright shorelines. The bride wore a black gown, while the groom chose a red-and-black suit.

“Our wedding is proof that you can work with traditional wedding vendors to help create your non-traditional wedding day, but it requires a lot of communication and openness,” Sammi said. “This is so they can have a clear understanding of your expectations, since it is easy to default to what is traditional.”

Because the venue’s planner struggled with communication, the couple faced stress typical of a destination event, yet they managed to keep the schedule on track.

Both parents escorted each partner down the aisle, giving each a moment of recognition. Handwritten vows were rolled into parchment-style scrolls, and the entourage entered to Apocalyptica’s cover of “Nothing Else Matters.” The groom’s walk featured “Nerevar Rising” from The Elder Scrolls, while the bride arrived to “The Power” from Baldur’s Gate 3.

For couples seeking a similar experience, the blend of personal fandom and cultural setting shows how a clear vision can transform a remote venue into a stage for unique storytelling. When the duo aligned their creative brief with local suppliers, the result was a cohesive scene that felt both intimate and theatrical, without sacrificing logistical realism.

Reception highlights and lessons learned

The florist and venue executed the fantasy brief, suspending a crystal chandelier from a tree and presenting a dragon cake whose mouth glowed. Both elements exceeded the couple’s initial expectations.

Custom drinks reflected their interests: “The Daedric Prince” drew on The Elder Scrolls, “AK32” referenced Anton’s initials and age, while Sammi ordered a “Vampire’s Margarita” and a “Sammi Special.”

After a brief dance lesson, the pair opened the evening with a first dance to Faith Hill’s “This Kiss.” She swapped her black gown for the white dress worn at their earlier legal ceremony in London, allowing freer movement. Anton donned a Filipino Barong for the moment.

The celebration transitioned into a traditional Filipino money dance, where guests pinned cash to sashes as blessings. Fire dancers concluded the night, adding a dramatic final tableau.

Reflecting on the planning process, the duo wishes they had established a clearer backup plan. They felt compelled to resolve issues on the spot rather than delegating responsibility.

“Work with vendors who understand what you are asking for,” Sammi advised, “or be prepared for extra communication if they do not. Traditional suppliers can help create unconventional weddings, but clarity and patience matter.”
